Breathing Underwater is about feeling out of one's element while adjusting to an unfamiliar environment. To this end, the musical material that comprises the opening sections of the piece is sparse and pointillistic, gradually coalescing as the composition progresses and drawing to a close as the flute and viola lock in with a repetitive harp ostinato.
